The day was founded by US-based transgender activist Rachel Crandall 2009 as a reaction to the lack of LGBT recognition of transgender people, citing the frustration that the only well-known transgender-centered day was the Transgender Day of Remembrance which mourned the murders of transgender people, but did not acknowledge and celebrate living members of the transgender community. International Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV) is an annual event on March 31 dedicated to celebrating transgender people and raising awareness of discrimination faced by transgender people worldwide, as well as a celebration of their contributions to society. Lesbian, Gay Bisexual, Transgender Staff Network Group (ALLOUT).Other LIT initiatives include working with other DAFBAWG teams on basing concerns, qualitative data collection and quantitative research, education and awareness, as well as medical policy review and amendment. The LIT is one of seven DAFBAWG teams chartered by the Department of the Air Force since March 2021. In 2021, President Joe Biden issued the first presidential proclamation officially recognizing Transgender Day of Visibility, stating, “We honor and celebrate the achievements and resiliency of transgender individuals and communities.” TDoV is an international awareness day dedicated to celebrating the accomplishments and victories of transgender and gender nonconforming people. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer/Questioning Initiatives Team of the Department of the Air Force Barrier Analysis Working Group (DAFBAWG) highlighted and observed Transgender Day of Visibility, or TDoV, on March 31.
